Lacing Together

We are excited to announce Lacing Together, a community art event celebrating Congleton’s heritage and creativity, to be held alongside our Spring Craft Fair at Congleton Town Hall on Sunday, 9th March, 2025. This project centres on the theme of lace, a craft that reflects both the intricate artistry of the past and the connections that bind communities together.

The project will include:

  • A Community Art Creation: Local residents and visitors will collaborate with local makers to create a unique public artwork inspired by the theme of lace. Each participant will be assisted to contribute a small lace piece to form part of a larger collective artwork.
  • Lacemaking Displays and Workshops: Informational displays about Congleton’s historic lacemaking industry, which played a role in the town’s development, as well as opportunities for attendees to try this heritage craft themselves.
  • Art Gallery: A curated gallery showcasing artwork created by local artists that explores the beauty, symbolism, and history of lace.

More about: Community Art Project

The theme of lace reflects Congleton’s cultural heritage and the contribution of the lacemaking trade, a craft that is now at risk of fading away. Lace represents intricacy, connection, and tradition, and this event will honour its historical significance while exploring its relevance in contemporary art and culture.

There will be a number of ‘workstations’ set up where visitors can be guided by an experienced lacemaker through the creation of a small piece of lace (or a part) which will be used to decorated on of Congleton’s iconic Bears.

Participation is free and the activity is suitable for ages approx 6+ and all ability levels.

There is no need to book, simply turn up on the day and enjoy!
